Giant turret

The Giant Turret is a deployable moving artillery, equipped with heavy armor, but with relatively weak engines. It has a large firing range, but the lack of the mobile stabilizer and turret servo systems it can only fire in a deployed position and in a narrow arc. The Giant Turret's construction is inspired by the German Great Rail Artillery, it was developed and put into active service in 1941.

Background[]

Real world history[]

Superheavy artillery has been the hallmark of World War 1 and World War 2. The great German railway guns like the Gustav and designs from the US and France were the chief inspiration for this monster's introduction into the game.

Unlike traditional superheavy railway guns, the Soviet Giant Turret is self-propelled and independent of any railways, able to cross harsh terrain with relatively a very slow speed.

Characteristics[]

The Giant Turret's primary role is to cover territories within great distances. It's 200 mm cannon is able to deliver massive devastation from a great distance. Unlike its German sister, the Soviet Giant Turret is self-propelled and has no need for railways. It is able to cross harsh terrain with relatively low speed.[1] It is very vulnerable to light and medium armor and its small turret at the front of the vehicle cannot fire on targets.

Availability[]

The Soviet faction gets access to this vehicle as soon as they hit tier 3. It cannot be obtained via the Soviet Union Black market. It is a special faction vehicle.

Upgrades[]

Structure-specific[]

  • HE Shells — increase damage of shells by 15%. Effectively buffs damage per minute.

Gameplay[]

Tactics[]

The Giant Turret boasts great range and exceptional firepower, especially against buildings and stationary units. It should be used to harass enemies from far beyond their range. Of course, the turret is incredibly slow and its slow shell makes it risky against faster moving enemies.

Counters[]

The Giant Turret is defenseless to fast vehicles that are close to it, but its large amount of health points still means that taking it down is a commitment.

Assessment[]

Pros[]

  • Incredible range.
  • Awesome damage per shot.
  • Lots of health points and heavy armor make it a tough nut to crack.
  • It can obliterate buildings, light vehicles, and massed infantry.
  • Not that expensive for what it is. Especially with upgrades.

Cons[]

  • Long shell travel time.
  • Extremely slow movement and turning speed.
  • No reliable close-range defense.
  • Gun arc is fairly limited.
  • Cannot transport heroes.
  • A huge target.
  • Limited to just one per War factory.
  • Somewhat expensive and slow to produce.
  • Needs upgrades to become somewhat cheap to produce.

Trivia[]

  • The idea of railway guns was first suggested in Russia in 1847 by Gustav Kori (proposal), followed by Ye. Repin (project, 1855), Pyotr Lebedev (who outlined the theoretical foundations of the railway artillery in Primeneniye Zheleznykh Dorog k Zashite Materika, 1857) and P. Fomin (developed a project of a large-caliber cannon, 1860).
  • The Giant Turret has a small turret and gun at the front, it seems to be 45mm in caliber. Alas, it cannot fire in the game.
  • While huge, the Giant Turret's 200mm gun is not too far fetched for the USSR. In fact, the USA and Soviets both had even bigger guns mounted on smaller and more maneuverable platforms.
