Devastation!
Elephant

The Elephant is the German heavy tank-hunter, which has heavy armour and an armour-piercing heavy weapon. The greatest disadvantage of the tank is the turret’s stabilizer system. The Elephant needs to stop to open fire on any target.

Background[]

Real world history[]

A major component of WWII tank-warfare doctrine was that certain vehicles were designated as tank killers, essentially self-propelled anti-tank gun platforms. This was the role of the Elephant (Elefant in German). It was initially called the 'Ferdinand'; after its designer, Ferdinand Porsche, but after some design changes it was officially called the Elephant on Hitler's orders. (Note: A strict vegetarian, Hitler often remarked to acquaintances that the elephant was the strongest of all land animals, yet ate no meat.)

Characteristics[]

The Elephant is as tough as the Pershing with its 450 health points, has heavy armor and a very powerful main gun. While not quite as tough as the Maus it possesses a significant firing range and can decimate weaker units or wear down even monstrous opponents like the Sonic tank or Kharkov-Rampager from afar.

Availability[]

This vehicle is available after the player researches Tech Level 3 and also researches "Homefront" from the Tank factory. Only factories with that upgrade can create the Elephant.

Upgrades[]

Structure-specific[]

  • Improved Barrels — increase rate of fire. Effectively buffs damage per minute.
  • Experimental Alloys — Increases damage resistance (armour) of this vehicle.
  • Basic Training — makes all newly-created Elephant tanks start with the first veterancy level.

Gameplay[]

Tactics[]

Using range is key with the Elephant. It has no turret and cannot fire on the movie, but it has greater range than other direct-fire land vehicles. Put it behind friendly light tanks and it can wear down even powerful heavy units. It is also an excellent weapon against special vehicles like the Ice Spitter but only from afar. If push comes to shove, it can be an OK heavy tank too. Its armor and health points make it a good shield for light vehicles, but the Maus is indeed still better at this.

Counters[]

The Elephant is vulnerable to anti-tank infantry and air assaults. Heavy artillery too can damage it. Since it cannot fire on the move, certain fast units can get the drop on it and deal damage / make it turn away from other, more powerful units.

Assessment[]

Pros[]

  • Can transport heroes.
  • One of the toughest normal vehicles in the game thanks to lots of health points and heavy armor.
  • Powerful main gun deals lots of damage to other units.
  • Excellent range allows it to outgun other powerful special units and fire from the cover of cheaper / even tougher units.

Cons[]

  • Expensive and slow to produce.
  • Requires "Homefront" upgrade.
  • Cannot react to emerging threats all that quickly and is slower than most anti-air units.
  • Can be captured by certain enemy abilities.
  • Defenseless against air units.
  • Has no turret and cannot fire on the move.
