Light tank, no sugar included.
Panther

The Panther, or Panzer V, was the German response to the Russian T-34, a tank that outgunned and outmaneuvered earlier incarnations of the Panzer line.

Background[]

Real world history[]

July 5, 1943 was the first time Russian forces would encounter the German Panther tank during Operation Citadel. Unfortunately for Germany, more than 80% of its Panther units failed due to mechanical issues.

It didn't take long for Germany to come up with a better design for the Panther, which soon became the mainstay of German armored combat forces. In War Front: Turning Point, the Panther is a flexible unit, capable of performing multiple roles on the battlefield.

Characteristics[]

The Panther is a fast tank with a good gun for a starting unit. It can deal quite well with infantry, provided the soldiers do not overrun it.

It has a relatively low cost, is built quickly, moves around the battlefield very well and makes for a decent transport for one's hero units. Its late-game viability does diminish, but it can still plug holes in the frontline or hound artillery and other light vehicles.

Availability[]

The German faction starts with this as their basic tier 1 tank. It can also be obtained as a random purchase via the Soviet Union Black market.

Upgrades[]

Structure-specific[]

  • Improved Barrels — increase rate of fire and damage per minute, effectively.
  • Experimental Alloys — Increases damage resistances of this vehicle.
  • Basic Training — makes all newly-created Panthers start with the first veterancy level.

Gameplay[]

Tactics[]

The Panther tank is easily the most expensive of the Light Tanks, but it is also the strongest in an even fight. It is fairly quick which allows it to close gaps in the frontline well. It makes for a good vehicle to quickly rush out and destroy light and medium artillery vehicles.

Counters[]

Medium tanks do not struggle too much with the Panther while heavies make quick work of it. Massed anti-tank infantry is devastating to Panther groups. It has no defense bar its speed against air units, so they are deadly for it as well.

Assessment[]

Pros[]

  • You do not need to advance to Tech Level 2.
  • It is superior to other nation's Tech Level 1 tanks.
  • A fairly speedy vehicle.
  • It has a turret, and a quick to turn one at that.
  • Can transport heroes.

Cons[]

  • Its armor is fairly weak.
  • Firepower is not outstanding.
  • Not as cheap as the T-70.

Selected Quotes[]

Trivia[]

  • It is the only Tech Level 1 tank that has gun markings once reaching full veteran level.
  • In real life, the Panther was a powerful tank that was generally superior in head-on engagements to the T-34-85, M4 Sherman, and even the Tiger 1. While it had other issues plaguing in, a tank versus tank battle was one of its strengths.
  • The Panther was classified as a medium tank in real life. Most other nations like the Soviets considered it to even be a type of heavy tank due to its size, weight, and power.
